Veteran Readiness & Employment

Chapter 31 pays training costs and a monthly subsistence allowance while you retrain for work you can do. It is a separate entitlement from the GI Bill®, so using it does not spend your 36 months.

  • For service-connected disabilities
  • Apprenticeships supported

Transfer of Entitlement

A transfer splits your existing 36 months between family members at full Post-9/11 rates. The request has to be approved before you separate — it cannot be done afterwards, which is the mistake people make most often.

  • Must be approved while serving
  • Added service commitment applies

VA Work-Study

You work in a VA-related role — often at the school’s certifying office or a VA facility — and are paid whichever minimum wage is higher, federal or state. Hours are capped at 25 times the number of weeks in your enrolment period.

Servicemembers Civil Relief Act

SCRA caps interest at 6% on obligations entered into before active service, and forgives the rest rather than deferring it. It also lets you end a residential lease or a car lease on qualifying orders.

VA Disability Compensation

Not an education benefit, but the one most likely to decide whether school is realistic: a tax-free monthly payment scaled to your combined rating, paid alongside any education benefit you are using.

  • Not education-specific
  • Stacks with the GI Bill®
